RE: Katie's book
I've also just finished reading Katie's book, Beautiful, and I have to say, I too was astonished by the bravery and spirit shown by this remarkable young woman. This is not the kind of book I'd normally read, but a friend recommended it to me as an inspirational read during a tough phase I was going through, and I must confess I thought it would be just another "Oh, what a hard life I've had" autobio by a pseudo-celebrity (certainly I'd never heard of Katie Piper before). I couldn't have been more wrong. Despite having achieved a certain level of exposure through her modelling and TV work, Katie was by no stretch of the imagination 'famous'. Reading her story, she struck me as just an ordinary girl, prettier than most maybe. I think that's what makes her story so remarkable - she's the girl who might live next door to you. Her story made me not only bring my own problems into sharp perspective, but also think hard about what it must be like to live with a disfigurement. I hope I'll never find out; but if I ever do, I also hope I'll be able to deal with it with even just a fraction of the courage, dignity and utter indomitability of spirit shown by this truly unique person.
Ps. I'm now reading her follow-up book, Things Get Better. Loving it. Does this make me a fanboy?
